Tripped Breakers

The photo shows two GFCI breakers one in the tripped position (top) and one in the off position (bottom). Recognizing the difference is important because a tripped breaker is the result of trouble in the circuit. A tripped breaker is somewhat in the middle and one in the off position is clearly shifted “closer” to the off inscription. To reset a breaker it must be pushed all the way off FIRST and then switched to ON. Failure to shift to off first will still remain OFF but perhaps look ON. GFCI breakers are designed to protect in failure. They should be tested monthly by pushing the actuating button (pictured white). If a breaker trips off during reset leave it off and have a professional evaluate the circuit for dangerous conditions. Other types of circuit breakers will appear similar to the tripped one in the picture when shunted and can be reset in the same manner described.
